Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can minimize creosote buildup in your chimney.

The Benefits of Seasoned Wood

Seasoned wood is wood that has been dried for at least six months, ideally longer. This drying process reduces moisture content, making the wood burn more efficiently and producing less smoke and creosote.

Freshly cut, or green wood, contains too much moisture, leading to more smoke and creosote, which accumulates in the flue and increases the risk of chimney fires. Always opt for properly seasoned firewood.

Hardwood vs. Softwood

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are excellent choices for a cleaner burn. These types of wood are denser and burn hotter and longer, producing less residue than softwoods.

Softwoods such as pine or fir burn quickly and produce more sap and creosote. If using softwoods, it's important to clean your chimney more frequently to manage buildup.

Storage Techniques

Properly storing firewood is just as important as choosing the right type. Keep wood off the ground and covered with a breathable tarp to protect it from rain while allowing air circulation.

Organizing your woodpile in a sunny spot can help speed the drying process. Avoid stacking the wood against your home to reduce the risk of pest infestation.
